Twenty-One

The morning after the feast, most of the palace residents stayed in bed for hours past sunrise. A night of drinking to excess meant hangovers were in full swing throughout the day. No one questioned it when I slept past noon.

Dumara joined me in my room past lunchtime with a basket on her arm. She’d gone to the palace kitchens and had it filled with portable goods. The scent of coconut-pineapple cakes lifted me from my bed, and Duma didn’t blink twice at the naked state of me.

Until she smacked my hand away from the basket, and my stomach grumbled in protest.

“No. We’re going to relax on the beach today. Go get ready,” she stated with an air of authority. The same one I imagined got her anything she wanted with her lovers.

“The beach? Oh, I’m too tired for that,” I complained wearily. My shoulders hunched, and I groaned dramatically for her entertainment.

“That’s why we’re going there to relax. The rest of your family is too hungover to bother us, so we’ll have the royal cove all to ourselves.” Duma shooed me toward the closet containing my Mithran wardrobe. Inside, I gathered the common beach wear for the kingdom.

I found a suit of vibrant red composed of thin strips of fabric connected by glittering strings that banded intricately around my chest, down my hips, then reconnected in a V below my navel to cover my nether region.

Mirroring Dumara, I plucked a lightweight sheer robe from the closet to cover myself on the walk through the palace. While she carried a parasol to block a fraction of the sunlight, I wore a woven hat with a wide brim to shield my eyes.

The lighthearted dream of snoozing on the beach had interrupted my memory of the night before. Until Dumara opened my door, and I came face to face with Aeron once again.

The shock of seeing him pitched my insides end over end.

Dark circles lined his eyes, yet he stood tall, guarding the hall, and keeping an eye out for danger. Our gazes didn’t meet as I passed, but his weighty stare seared over my profile. He followed behind with a grim energy that permeated from him and soured my mood.

Guilt for last night lacerated my insides, even though it had no reason to. My time with Aeron was purely physical. We were nothing to each other, regardless of our trysts.

Yet, as prickly as the captain was, I enjoyed him. Even when I wanted to throw the nearest thing at him, I also wanted to throw myself.

In the heat of the moment last night, I wanted—no, needed—Leo to fuck me. And gods, I’d relished it. The memory of toe-curling pleasure haunted my spirit. I regretted the encounter from my sickly heart to my twisting stomach.

Leo had been my enemy from the start, and caving to desire with him was irresponsible. Regardless of him speaking to me as one might with their beloved. Letting his pretty words distract me from the truth of what he was made me feel like a mindless fool.
